Measurements & Conversions

Keep in mind that for solid substances the US Standard measurement system uses volume as the basis for measurements (i.e. cups and tablespoons), while Metric uses weight (i.e. grams or kilograms). This is important to remember because substances can vary greatly in density, and there is no absolute method for converting a standard measurement to metric; it varies from substance to substance. For example, a cup of peanut butter and a cup of rice may take up the same volume, but the peanut butter weighs about 260 grams, while the rice weighs 190 grams.

Having said this, you will notice that in recipes calling for small quantities of an ingredient (a teaspoon or Tablespoon) we have not converted the ingredient to grams on the metric side.  We chose not to do this because most Romanians do not measure out 1.2 grams of anything. It is more common to use spoons. A large spoon, or lingura can be used to approximate a Tablespoon. A small spoon, or lingurita can be used to approximate a teaspoon.

It is also worth noting, in Romania many ingredients come in small packets (like baking powder, lemon salt and vanilla sugar). 1 packet generally contains 10 g, which is the equivalent of 3 tsp or 1 Tbs.
